Pay No Gap means no extra out of pocket expenses for you because EK Dental Surgery has accepted the terms of the no gap scheme offered by Medibank and HCF. (After a patient has swiped their Medibank or HCF card there will be no additional fees to be paid).

Dental Exam

Regular dental exams are an important part of preventive health care.

During a dental exam, your Glen Waverley dentist or hygienist will clean your teeth and check for cavities and gum disease. The dentist or hygienist will also evaluate your risk of developing other oral health problems, as well as check your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities.

During a dental exam, the dentist or hygienist will likely discuss your diet and oral hygiene habits and might demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. Other topics for discussion might include lifestyle factors that can affect oral health and possible cosmetic improvements to your teeth.

The Scale And Clean

The scale and clean leaves the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them and you have a head start on keeping your teeth clean during regular home care.

The scale and clean involves the following:

• Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface.
• Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins that cause gum inflammation known as gingivitis, which can lead to periodontal disease.
• Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

No matter how often you brush and floss, calculus still builds up on your teeth, especially in harder to reach areas and especially behind your lower front teeth. A regular toothbrush and/or dental floss cannot remove this type of deposit, it can only be removed by a professional scale and clean.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments are given to children who have some cavities or are susceptible to developing cavities. Adults who are also vulnerable to tooth decay can also benefit from the treatment.

Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by defending your teeth against acid attacks caused by plaque bacteria and sugars in your mouth. Amazingly, it can also reverse early tooth decay. For kids younger than 6 years, fluoride is part of the development of permanent teeth, defending them against the acids that demineralize the teeth.

But we now know that adults can also benefit from added fluoride. Fluoride disrupts acid production in the already erupted teeth of adults, as well as children.

Fluoride treatment gives your teeth an opportunity to remineralise and increases the durability of the teeth to prevent tooth decay. The treatment requires only one appointment.

To start the treatment, your dentist will:

• Clean the teeth to remove any debris and staining.
• Place a high concentrate fluoride foam or gel into an arched shape dental tray. The tray is inserted over your teeth and left for the required time.
• (Alternatively) paint a fluoride varnish to the tooth surface.

After treatment, nothing should be eaten or drunk for 30 minutes. This allows the fluoride to penetrate your teeth.
