Spring Cleaning for your Mouth with EK Dental Surgery

Take a look outside and it becomes obvious – spring is here!

Sunny, warmer days, birds in the air, blooming flowers, and the idea of a new start dominates the season. As a part of clearing out the old and dusty and ringing in the new and sparkly, spring cleaning begins.

We all know this is an excellent time to deep clean your house, reorganize, and re-design. Spring cleaning not only gives us a sense of satisfaction but it also cleans up our homes and gives us a chance to throw out some of the useless things we’ve accumulated.

But why stop this spring transformation with only a thorough cleaning and updating of your home? Why not freshen up and renew your teeth, smile, and mouth?

Your dental care is essential. Healthy gums and teeth enable you to speak and chew properly. They also reflect your health and personality, often affecting your confidence, social life, love life, and work.  Just as your home is not just a place to live but a space that reflects who you are, so is your smile.

At EK Dental Surgery we want to work with you this spring to boost your happiness, confidence, and self-esteem, by improving your smile. With that in mind, the following are some things you can do for an oral spring cleaning as well as what we can do to help you.

Steps you can take

Avoid sugary and acidic drinks. Spring is when we increase our consumption of cold drinks. Sugary drinks can do incredible damage to teeth. Sugar attaches to the surfaces of your mouth, creating a perfect breeding area for bacteria. When bacteria consume sugar, they excrete enamel-damaging acid, increasing your risk of developing cavities. Acidic drinks have similar damaging effects by attacking your tooth enamel.

The best choice for your summer drink is simple, healthy water. It helps keep you hydrated and is good for your teeth.

Check expiration dates. Start with your mouthwash. We recommend a mouth rinse as part of a good daily oral hygiene routine. But if your mouthwash is past the expiration date, toss it out. Your toothbrush doesn’t have an expiration date printed on it, but it definitely has one.

If your toothbrush is more than four months old, it is well overdue for swapping out. The same is true for electric toothbrushes. Additionally, if your toothbrush is looking beat up or if you are recovering from an illness, it’s time to retire your existing toothbrush and get a new one.

Clean everything! Cleaning our retainers, mouthguards for sports, nightguards for bruxism, Invisalign, etc. is part of our daily routine The containers these sit in, on the other hand, are often neglected and can collect bacteria and nasty grime.

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to soak all dental cases and give them a vigorous scrub to clean them of debris and bacteria. If you have a toothbrush holder, either on the sink or on the wall, give it a complete cleaning as well. Your bathroom, where most of us brush our teeth, is full of bacteria, so cleanliness is key to dental health.

Go electric. Consider getting more cleaning power by upgrading to an electric toothbrush. These brushes are better at removing debris from your teeth, and they require less effort.
